William Bowie was a prominent sculptor of the American Mid-Century Modern period. A contemporary of Harry Bertoia, Curtis Jere and Bruce Freidle, Bowie is considered a founding figure of the American metal sculpture genre. His works' exploration of artistic beauty and meaning in industrial materials, closely associates him with the Brutalist movement.
This abstract sculpture is a fine example of the artist's techinque and skill. Sheets formed of polished bronze and verdigris seem to wrap around one another giving the piece depth and presense. The scupture rests on the original stone base and retains the sticker with Bowie's name on it.
