Although the origins of the Vistosi glass company can be traced back to the 16th century, it was its re-establishment in 1945 under Guglielmo Vistosi, and particularly the succession of his son Luciano shortly thereafter in 1952, that the Murano-based glassmaker made its mark.
Luciano, an aspiring glass artist, had planned on designing and creating a collection of his own but with the untimely passing of Guglielmo in 1952, he found himself with the larger responsibility of running the family business. Now in charge, Luciano began a policy of forging partnerships with outside artists, many of whom were destined to become luminaries of Italian design, bringing their unique visions to Vistosi. These collaborations turned out to be a formula for success, and from 1960 onward formed the backbone of the company.
Although much of the glass made in the 60s and 70s is white or translucent, works by Vistosi are best characterized by the incorporation of a wide range of vibrant colors, which stand in contrast, enhancing visual appeal. The many collaborations with other artists resulted in collections that included a varied mix of classic, modern and eclectic designs incorporating traditional and contemporary methods to produce the shapes and textures associated with Vistosi glass. Although most work is well documented, there are often limited additions and even the occasional one-off, reflecting the fluidity of the designs and highlighting the unique one-of-a-kind quality intrinsic to hand-crafted glass.
This bi-colore ring and globe pendant embodies many of the characteristics that define Vistosi. The traditional double cone glass disc fixture is given a unique, contemporary make-over via the use of frosted white, textured glass, enhanced by the contrast created when set against the deep amber hue of the globes suspended within them.
