A unique, one-of-a-kind work of art, the technique used to create this Murano cotisso vase assures that no two are alike. Cotisso or "Chunks" are small pieces of excess glass cut away, broken off, or otherwise discarded during production. Traditionally, workers would use cotisso to fashion drinking glasses for themselves, in order to stay cool while working the hot furnaces. Eventually, cotisso found their way into other creations, used to add a splash of color or pattern, becoming a main component in Millefiori. This intricate technique used chunks of colorful glass to create canes of glass that revealed elaborate patterns when cut into cross-sections.

Our Cotisso vase is made by the same technique used for centuries. Cotissi are laid out in a large pan. A completed and cooled red sommerso vase is plunged into a vat of molten glass and turned to coat like a strawberry in chocolate. Before the vase can start to melt it’s rolled through the cotisso several times like an ice cream cone through sprinkles. The result is a one-of-a-kind creation as the molten glass coating begins to cool, fusing the irregular cotisso to the surface of the vase.

Venfield currently has this ruby red glass vase with white Cotisso, as well as a clear sommerso vase with clear Cotisso.
