A unique, one of a kind work of art, the technique used to create this Murano cotisso vase assures that no two are alike. Cotisso or "Chunks" are  small pieces of excess glass cut away , broken off or otherwise disgarded during production. Traditionally workers would use cotisso to fashion drinking glasses for themselves, in order  to stay cool while working the hot furnaces. Eventually cotisso found their way into other creations, used to add a splash of color or pattern becoming a main component in Millefiori. This intricate technique used the chunk of colorful glass to create canes of glass that were aligned to create intricate patterns when cut into cross-sections.

Our cotisso vase is made much more simply but yields dramatic effects. Cotisso are laid out in a large pan. A completed and cooled red somersso vase is  plunged into a vat of molten glass and turned to coat. Before the vase can start to melt it’s rolled through the cotisso several times like an ice cream cone through sprinkles. The result is a one of a kind creation as the molten glass coating begins to cool, fusing the irregular cotisso to the vases surface.

Venfield currently has a red sommerso vase with white cotisso and a clear glass vase with clear cotisso. Available in additionsl colors and combinations. Please inquire with Venfield for avialability and lead times.
